（1）fail 意为“不及格；失败；未做”，其名词形式是failure, 反义词是succeed . fail 表示“不及格”时，既可以作及物动词，也可以作不及物动词。表示“考试不及格”可以用fail an exam, 也可用fail in an exam. 例如：

Our plan has failed .

我们的计划失败了。

（2）fail to do sth. 意为“未能做某事”。例如：

He did very well, but failed to break the record.

他做得很出色，但未破纪录。
